Darko Orphans was established in 2005 to serve the needs of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). It’s a Legal entity Registered under the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services as a Non-Profit Community Based Organization. It first started operations, and still is in the Kathonzweni sub-county of Makueni County. Here, Darko has been involved in meeting the education, medical and food needs for OVCs. Darko’s policy for assisting OVCs has been to take care of them while in foster homes and not to withdraw them into a children’s home. The foster homes are located within the locality the children come from and therefore receive family care in familiar surroundings. Currently Darko has under its care 90 children, who continue to receive the needed assistance. Darko has since expanded its operations into Athi River, Mlolongo and Makindu.
Darko Orphans has since had different projects going on… Darko Primary School, which focuses on primary school children from different schools, Darko Secondary school which takes in children who have successfully completed their primary level. Darko Secondary School runs entirely on support from donors and sponsored children. We have professional teachers and staff who guide the children morally and spiritually. Darko Orphans has had the privilege to take some of our OVC’s to Universities and are still doing the same.
Darko believes in education and empowering a self-sustaining community.
In 1986, her mother obtained a World Vision Education sponsorship. It felt so good going to school every morning without the smallest worry about school fees. She vowed that if the Almighty GOD took her through schooling, that she would perpetuate the legacy and support vulnerable children in the society.
In February 2003, Elizabeth joined the CBN counseling team as a volunteer counselor. Two years down the line, she strongly felt that she needed to go beyond counseling and help the countless needy, especially children and women. Elizabeth has not forgotten her vow. With support from colleagues they helped her establish a children’s Project.
With the blessings of the LORD JESUS; with support from like minded individuals and organizations, Darko Orphans has doubled its capacity to help more disadvantaged children in the society.
The founder’s dream is to work towards establishing a society where all orphans and vulnerable children are absorbed in homes, either through adoptions or foster homes and provided with love, care and security.
James 1:27 “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”
